History of District Grand Lodge of East Africa
Freemasonry in East Africa, found its roots in Zanzibar with the consecration of Lodge East Africa No.3007, on the 27th of April 1904, by members of the British Colonial service resident on the Sultanate at the time
The History of Freemasonry in the East Africa Protectorate however dates back to the arrival of the Uganda railway, at the then Nairobi railhead. Officials and administrators of the railway department, daunted by their spirit of Freemasonry requested for the formation of a Lodge on the mainland and it was not until 1905, when Lodge Harmony No.3084 was formed in Nairobi, did the fraternity actually find a solid foundation
The first Lodge in Uganda, Victoria Nyanza Lodge No.3492 was consecrated in Entebbe in 1911. Tanzania, then known as Tanganyika, having been a German colony from 1886 to 1918, had no Masonry until the territory was ceded to Britain and the first Lodge, Haven of Peace Lodge No.4385 was consecrated in 1922
The District Grand Lodge of East Africa was inaugurated in Nairobi on 15th October 1926 by the Grand Secretary W. Bro. Sir Philip Colville-Smith accompanied by W. Bro. James Terry PGD. R. W. Bro. Sir Jacob William Barth was installed as the first District Grand Master
The District at the time comprised of ten Lodges in Kenya and one in Uganda. The two Lodges in Tanganyika and two in Zanzibar remained outside the District until 1945, but were overseen by the District Grand Masters doubling as Grand Inspectors
